FIGURE 42: (A, close-up of panel & B, tracing): At several sites there are representations of flying termites swarming above globular forms that could reasonably be interpreted as the termites’ mounds, known colloquially as anthills. While the detailed formlings reflect close-up and finer features of both the interiors and exteriors of the nests, these examples show only the outside forms, the earthen edifices that are a common sight above the ground in the savannahs.

FIGURE 43: (A) This image, from Silozwane Cave, is possibly the best specimen of painted flying termites but scattered in various parts of this shelter are some formlings, serpents, transformed figures and a wide range of animal and human figures. On the second image (B), two flying termites are shown hovering above dots and flecks on the edges of a second formling at eNanke Cave.
